Tim Neilson is a Special Counsel of Greenwoods & Freehills Pty Limited in Melbourne, having previously spent 4 years as a partner at Freehills, following 15 years experience with another national law firm.

Industry Experience

Tim primarily practices in the area of income tax, including capital gains tax.

Tim advises private sector and Government clients, both Australian and international, in relation to a diverse range of transactions including takeovers, debt and equity raisings, restructurings and infrastructure projects.

 

His experience with public/private infrastructure projects dates back to the first major infrastructure privatisation in Australia, the Loy Yang B power station sale.

Recent transactions in which he has been involved include corporate restructuring of an alternative energy business, acquisition of a controlling interest in an Australian mining company, a private to private acquisition of a substantial shareholding in the owner of certain Australian airport operators and a government to private transfer of the operator of another Australian airport.

Professional Background

Tim has an Honours Degree in Law from Melbourne University and a Master of Laws Degree from London University.

He is a member of revenue law related committees of the Law Council of Australia and the Taxation Institute of Australia, and a member of the Advisory Board for the Monash University Journal of Australian Taxation.

He has published frequently in professional journals and spoken at professional organisation conferences and seminars and has guest lectured at the University of Melbourne as part of its Masters of Laws program.
